The Penitential Tyrant: Dolores Is Pain, 2019-Ongoing
Film-performance in three acts. 22'
The work is a meditation on the history of production, consumption and expansion of popcorn in modern colonial history, especially in relation to the film industry and Hollywood. It reflects on the historical and socioeconomic intricacies of the global corn industry, its relationship to Mexican culture, and the popularization of popcorn in the United States after the Great Depression. The performance was first presented at Los Angeles Historic State Park—a site that was formerly a cornfield. In 2021 the performance was presented at Centre d'Art la Panera in Lleida, at La Virreina Centre de la Imatge in Barcelona, and in 2022 at AGO Museum in Toronto.
